About OpenPlate

Calories, protein, vitamins and minerals for thousands of foods from USDA FoodData Central, plus U.S. food recall records from the FDA Enforcement Report.

Nutrition data

Food pages use USDA FoodData Central, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. OpenPlate downloads two public datasets: Foundation Foods (release of Apr 30, 2026, 317 foods used here) and SR Legacy (final release of April 2018, 6,650 foods used here). USDA publishes FoodData Central data in the public domain under CC0 1.0.

To keep the site about generic foods, OpenPlate leaves out USDA's Branded Foods dataset, the SR Legacy fast-food and restaurant groups, and other entries whose names include a brand (1,147 entries in all). All values are per 100 g as USDA reports them; per-portion values are calculated from USDA portion weights. Percent Daily Values use the FDA Daily Values for adults and children 4 years and older (21 CFR 101.9).

Food recall records

Recall pages use the openFDA food enforcement reports API from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which carries the records published in the FDA's weekly Enforcement Report. OpenPlate keeps records reported since Oct 27, 2024; openFDA last updated this data Oct 21, 2026. openFDA content is released under CC0 1.0.

openFDA asks that this data not be used to issue public alerts or to track the lifecycle of a recall, and notes that a recall's status may not be updated after it is published. OpenPlate shows these records as an archive. For current recall news, check FDA.gov or the retailer. Company and product names in recall records belong to their owners.

openFDA disclaimer: Do not rely on openFDA to make decisions regarding medical care. While we make every effort to ensure that data is accurate, you should assume all results are unvalidated. We may limit or otherwise restrict your access to the API in line with our Terms of Service.

How often it updates

The site checks both sources once a day and rebuilds only when the data changes. USDA releases new Foundation Foods data about twice a year; the FDA publishes its Enforcement Report weekly. The recalls page and the home page also ask openFDA for the newest records when they load in your browser.

Not advice

OpenPlate is for general information only. It is not medical, nutrition or food-safety advice, and it does not recommend any food or diet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration do not endorse OpenPlate.
