From USDA FoodData Central, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. OpenPlate uses two of its public-domain datasets: Foundation Foods (317 foods, release of Apr 30, 2026) and SR Legacy (6,650 foods, final release of April 2018). Branded products, fast food and restaurant items are not included.
Are the numbers per serving or per 100 grams?
Every food page starts with values per 100 grams of the edible part of the food. Where USDA lists household measures such as a cup or a tablespoon, you can pick one and the page recalculates the numbers using the gram weight USDA gives for that portion.
How is % Daily Value calculated?
OpenPlate divides the amount of a nutrient by the FDA Daily Value for adults and children 4 years and older. For example, the Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg and for dietary fiber is 28 g. Total sugars and trans fat have no Daily Value.
Where do the food recall records come from?
From openFDA, the FDA's public data service, which publishes the records in the FDA's weekly Enforcement Report. OpenPlate lists 2,923 food recalls reported between Oct 27, 2024 and Oct 21, 2026; openFDA last updated this data Oct 21, 2026.
What do Class I, Class II and Class III recalls mean?
The FDA puts each recall in a class by health hazard. Class I is the most serious: there is a reasonable probability the product could cause serious health problems or death. Class II products may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems. Class III products are not likely to cause health problems.
Is the recall status on OpenPlate always current?
Not necessarily. openFDA says a recall's status may not be updated after it is published in the Enforcement Report, and these records are not meant to be used as public alerts. For current recall news, check FDA.gov or ask the retailer where you bought the product.
Is OpenPlate medical or nutrition advice?
No. OpenPlate republishes public government data for general information. It does not recommend foods or diets. Talk with a doctor or registered dietitian about your own needs.
